5 New Year Books for Kids and the Classroom

Looking for a new year read aloud or books about the new year to add to your classroom library? There aren’t as many books about this holiday as some others, but I’ve found five great options for you! This post contains affiliate links.

  1. Squirrel's New Year's Resolution by Pat Miller Follow Squirrel as she tries to figure out what a resolution is and how to make one. This delightful story is perfect for introducing the concept of setting goals and self-improvement to students.

  2. Shanté Keys and the New Year’s Peas by Gail Piernas-Davenport Shanté discovers that her family is out of black-eyed peas, a traditional New Year’s dish. As she searches for more, she learns about different cultural New Year’s traditions. This book is great for discussing diversity and celebrating cultural differences.

  3. The Lucky Grapes: A New Year's Eve Story by Tracey Kyle This newer title features a family celebrating New Year’s Eve in Spain. It’s particularly fun if you have Spanish speakers in your classroom!

  4. Playing with Lanterns by Wang Yage This book is about the Lunar New Year and Chinese traditions. While Lunar New Year isn’t on the same day as the standard new year, you can still incorporate it into your New Year’s read alouds.

  5. Every Month Is a New Year: Celebrations Around the World by Marilyn Singer This is a detailed book about new year celebrations around the world, that take place throughout the year. You may find it is a little detailed for younger readers and want to edit a bit as you read aloud.

I hope these new year books for kids are a great addition to your home or classroom library!
