  1. Write and reflect. The new year is the perfect time to review growth mindset and set new goals. Using this journal, students will reflect on the past year by answering questions about goals they have reached and challenges they have encountered. Prefer to keep things paperless? Snag the New Year’s Reflection Journal for Google Classroom.

2. Read a New Year’s-themed read-aloud, like Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution.

3. Set resolutions and make a cute craft. Nothing says “new year” like a new year’s resolution! Have student’s record their resolutions and make a simple party hat craft to decorate your classroom door or bulletin board.

4. Have students come up with their word of the year for the new year. The idea is to choose one word that sums up how they want to live or what they want to focus on for the new year. They can write their word in bubble letters on a piece of paper and decorate it, or write in their journals why they chose their word. Need some ideas? My words for the past few years were enjoy (2022), present (2021), confidence (2020), and grow (2019).

5. Learn about new year celebrations around the world with a quick video, like this one.

I hope these New Year’s activities make your return to the classroom a little easier and more fun!
