Frida's Nursery Tour
This isn’t exactly teaching-related, but I’ve gotten A LOT of questions about Frida’s nursery over on Instagram, so I thought I’d put together a post here so you can find all the answers and links in one place.

I wanted a Frida Kahlo-inspired nursery (Frida’s namesake), but I found that most baby stuff is very pastel or neutral. That’s how I ended up painting my own mural instead of using wallpaper, as well as purchasing items that we’re specifically designed for a baby.
Here’s the first inspiration board I put together to pick a color palette. I used the color picker tool in Keynote to put together my final palette, which is the circles on the bottom right.
The biggest project was by far the mural. I found a few different murals and wallpaper designs I liked online, and then put together my own design in Keynote just using different shapes. I measured out the exact dimensions of the wall and window, and then placed this grid over my design with each square representing one foot. Then I printed this design out, and traced a grid on the actual wall. Then I sketched in my design, using the grid as a guide.
I just used acrylic craft paints from Michael’s and Dick Blick. Since I couldn’t go to the store (pregnant in a pandemic!) I ordered a TON of different colors to make sure I got the right ones. Thankfully craft paints are only around $2 a bottle. I worked on the mural each night— I’m not sure how long it took me, definitely a month or more, but it was a fun pandemic project.
This area is where I plan on nursing at night and reading to Frida.
Rocking Chair: Best Choice Products
Shelves: IKEA
Table: Amazon
Cactus Hamper: Crate & Kids
Pug Doll: Etsy (I put this on my registry and was SO thrilled someone got it for us! It’s handmade by a Polish artist and really beautiful and detailed.)
Rug: Boutique Rugs (the 7’ 10” x 10’ was discounted to $260 when I bought mine, so keep an eye on the price if it’s higher than that!)
We are using the dresser as a changing table as well as for clothing to avoid an extra piece of furniture.
Dresser: IKEA
Knobs: Amazon (I painted them with the same paints I used for the mural and then sealed them with Mod Podge)
Frames: Target
Pug Print: I put this together myself using a piece of clip art and then had it printed as a poster through VistaPrint
Moth Print: Society 6 (printing as a poster is a very affordable option!)
Changing Pad: Hatch
Diaper Pail: Ubbi
Weighted Wipe Container: Oxo
This area is instead of the gallery wall I originally planned— I got a little overwhelmed about putting one together so I went with a simple display shelf instead, with an expanding rack below. On the ground below this I also have a three-bin storage cubby for toys and swaddles.
Shelf: Amazon
Expanding Rack: Amazon (Amazon informs me I bought this in 2013! I’ve gotten a lot of use out of it)
Storage Cubby: Target
Frida Art: Gifted by Art with Mrs. E
Frida Doll: Sanctus Stitches (gifted by my sister)
I think that about covers everything! Crib not shown because I kept it very basic with a white crib and nothing hanging near it for safety reasons. Thanks for reading!
